Sharing Videos With Students

Microsoft Stream (Recommended)

Microsoft Stream is recommended for adding captions to videos and sharing them with students. Learn how to upload videos to Microsoft Stream, use the auto-generate caption feature, and integrate the video within your CourseLink site by watching the following video or, if you prefer, follow the step by step instructions laid out in the Linking Stream and CourseLink document.

NEW: Through a joint project between OpenEd and CCS Instructors can now create a Microsoft Security Group which links to a CourseLink Classlist. This means that videos shared through Microsoft Stream can be restricted to students in the class.

Zoom Cloud Recording

Zoom Pro users have access to cloud recording of meetings that are saved in the Zoom Cloud and can be accessed and shared at a later date.

Please Note: CourseLink integration is limited to Instructors who have a Zoom Pro account linked with their University of Guelph email and registered with CourseLink Technical Support. Those with personal accounts will need to share videos following the non-integration instructions on page two of the Integrating Zoom with CourseLink document.
Zoom has a time-coded auto-transcription feature that is added to recordings when they are published. As such videos hosted on Zoom Cloud within CourseLink should automatically have closed captioning added to the videos.

Interact Streamer can also be used for students registered with SAS to receive live captions during meetings if needed.

More Options for Hosting Videos

There are other options to host video content on. However, note that CourseLink is not recommended to host video files, but rather can be used to embed externally hosted vidoess within modules or linked directly to external sites.

Microsoft OneDrive is available to all students, faculty and staff through their Office 365 Account. OneDrive allows files to be stored and shared, and due to its integration with the campus, allows users to restrict access to files and folders.

Microsoft OneDrive is supported by CCS. For more information on using OneDrive to host lecture content, click here.

Note: OneDrive does not offer a closed captioning option on videos.
Videos may be hosted through the University of Guelph's library using McIntyre Media.
To learn more, please contact the library directly at library@uoguelph.ca.
YouTube can be used to upload, view and comment on videos, and also allows playlists and channels to be created. The platform is free to all users and offers closed captioning transcription services.

For more information on what options are available to host videos on, visit OpenEd's website. If you are unsure which option is best for your content, OpenEd has developed a comparison matrix of the available features for each.

Compressing Videos

You may find that the file size of your video is too large to upload to CourseLink or that it takes too long to download. If this is the case, you may need to compress your video which reduces the file size. We recommend using HandyBrake to compress your video.
