M.Eng. Program

Introduction

The Master of Engineering (MEng) program offers opportunities for advanced training in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing and Water Resources Engineering.

The MEng program offer two study options: first being course-based, and the second being course-work plus a major research project. The course-based option provides graduates with a fuller understanding of engineering principles with a focus on professional development and skill relevant to working in industry. The Major Research Project (MRP) option allows students to deepen their understanding of engineering principals through coursework and engage in cutting-edge engineering research by developing and researching their own research project. The project requires a final written report that is presented in a public seminar followed by an oral examination of the candidate.

Program Fees

Please refer to Student Financial Services for further information about Graduate Fees.

Program Requirements

All incoming MEng students will be enrolled in the “Coursework” study option by default. If students wish to complete their degree via “Coursework and MRP,” they are encouraged to contact potential advisors within their first semester of study.

Please see the Graduate Calendar section on Engineering Requirements, MEng Program for full MEng Program Requirements.

Coursework

Students must complete 4.5 credits according to the following:

  • 9 courses;
  • No more than 1.0 credits from senior undergraduate engineering courses;
  • No more than 1.0 credits from outside engineering; and
  • A minimum of 3.5 credits from engineering.

At least 2.5 credits of coursework must be field-specific (see the MEng section of the School of Engineering website for lists of courses). Remaining credits should be chosen in consultation with the MEng Graduate Coordinator.

Coursework and Major Research Project (MRP)

Students must complete 4.5 credits according to the following:

  • 7 courses and the Final Project Course (1.0);
  • No more than 1.0 credits from senior undergraduate engineering courses;
  • No more than 1.0 credits from outside engineering; and
  • A minimum of 3.5 credits from engineering (including the Final Project Course).

At least 2.5 credits of coursework must be field-specific (see the MEng section of the School of Engineering website for lists of courses). Remaining credits should be chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor. For the final project course, one member of the graduate faculty will be appointed by the Associate Director, Graduate Studies as an advisor.

Collaborative International Development Studies (IDS) Designation

Students in the Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering fields can choose to combine their MEng with an IDS designation (MEng:L + IDEV). The collaborative IDS specialization offers an interdisciplinary framework for the study of international development that combines training in a selected academic discipline with exposure to a broad range of social science perspectives.  This designation gives extra flexibility in the job market while permitting disciplinary specialization required by most PhD programs.

Degree Requirements

Students complete International Development Studies core requirements and the requirements of their home department.

IDS Master’s Core requirements:

  • IDEV*6200 [1.00] Development Theory, Issues and Process

  • IDEV*6300 [0.50] Research and Analysis in a Development Context

Optional IDS Courses:

  • IDEV*6000 [0.50] Regional Context

  • IDEV*6500 [0.50] Fieldwork in International Development Studies

Requirements from School of Engineering:

  • Six courses from the list of required graduate courses in Engineering (to be selected in consultation with Advisor)

  • ENGG*6950 or ENGG*6900 [1.00] Final Project
